Nestled in the heart of London’s prestigious St James’s district, The English Rose Café & Tea Shop offers an authentic taste of traditional English charm wrapped in a cozy, inviting atmosphere. This quintessential British café is a haven for both locals and visitors seeking an idyllic spot to savour classic English fare and refined teatime indulgences.
The café’s culinary offerings are a loving ode to English tradition, showcasing a menu filled with beloved staples crafted to delight the senses. Whether you arrive hungry for a hearty breakfast or a light lunch, the experience begins with iconic dishes like the Traditional English Breakfast, rich with perfectly cooked eggs, savory sausages, and crispy bacon that fill your palate with warmth and comfort. Their famed scones — available in a variety of tempting options including vanilla, raisin, and the rotating “scone of the week” — are a definite highlight. Served warm, these scones are beautifully crumbly with just the right touch of sweetness, pairing impeccably with freshly brewed hot teas or a soothing pot of white tea.
The lunch menu impresses with thoughtfully assembled sandwiches and pastries that are as gratifying as they are fresh. Signature choices like The Club sandwich, packed with chicken breast, crispy bacon, and fresh lettuce, or the vegan counterpart featuring plant-based “chicken” and mayonnaise, cater to diverse tastes without compromising on flavor. Pastry lovers will relish the Homemade Sausage Roll, where honey roasted sausage meat melds exquisitely with caramelised onion chutney inside flaky, golden puff pastry.
The café also shines in its afternoon tea offerings. Customers rave about the Traditional Afternoon Tea for Two, a refined ensemble of finger sandwiches, scones, and delicate pastries, perfectly matched with expertly brewed teas or indulgent drinks like their Chai Latte with a Shot of Espresso and Oat Milk or velvety hot chocolate. The charming British interior — warm, cozy, and authentically styled — invites guests to unwind after a stroll through nearby St James’s Park or a royal visit to Buckingham Palace.
Visitors repeatedly praise the café’s warm hospitality and attentive service. Teresa Colanzi called it “the best place to enjoy scones in London,” while Jessie Mo found the scones “absolutely outstanding” with “a perfect texture slightly crumbly, not too sweet, and full of flavor.” Many appreciate the calm escape it offers amid the bustling city, a sentiment echoed by Meskerem Bahre who described it as “a very cozy place for afternoon tea” with “absolutely delicious” food. Whether you’re seeking a leisurely afternoon tea or a satisfying brunch, The English Rose Café & Tea Shop promises an experience that indulges your senses and kindles a genuine fondness for traditional British cuisine.
A traditional cream tea with vanilla scone and white tea as recommended by Arwa and Fajr. Friendly yet professional service. We enjoyed a leisurely tea time after an afternoon rainy walk by St James park. They also have a seasonal scone with raisins and spices but unfortunately after one scone, I cannot manage another one. Looking forward to come back.
I asked around for the best place to enjoy scones in London and ended up here — and it did not disappoint! We ordered two teapots, a raisin scone and the scone of the week. Perfect stop before or after Buckingham Palace.
This charming, English-style eatery serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The English cuisine was surprisingly delicious, and I particularly enjoyed the fruit-flavored tea. If you're planning a full day at Buckingham Palace, this is the perfect retreat for a wonderful lunch or a relaxing afternoon tea.
A very cozy place for afternoon tea. The food was absolutely delicious, and the service was excellent. A perfect spot to relax and enjoy a lovely afternoon
The scones were absolutely outstanding:warm, with a perfect texture: slightly crumbly, not too sweet, and full of flavor. Easily among the best I have ever tasted. The service was also excellent; the staff member was very friendly and welcoming. The tearoom itself has a lovely, cozy atmosphere and a charming, typically British interior. A perfect spot for a relaxing afternoon break.
Such a cute place right opposite Buckingham Palace tour exit. If you order a pot of tea you get completely different pieces which is like being at grannies house. Servers are incredibly nice and attentive. English Rose wallpaper, teapots and even a piano and lamps in the corners complete the picture. English Breakfast was excellent. Eggs were so so fluffy! Get here on time because Breakfast quickly turns to lunch. Lots of people just come here for the Scones which I didn’t have time for during my trip but NEXT TIME!!!
I‘m glad I‘ve found this beautiful little Café during our stay in London. I first came here with my mother to enjoy an traditional afternoon tea. We‘ve asked for an vegetarian menu and there was no problem. The vegetarian sandwich fingers as well as the - warm and fresh - scones were very delicious. The brownie was very good too. The only thing we would suggest is that the topping of the red velvet and carrot cake could be with less sugar. To us, the cream topping was too sweet. The scones were so good that we came to another cream tea some days later. We would recommend this café to everyone.
